Frequently Asked Questions,
Prices and Solutions

What do your loft beds cost?

We want to help everyone, so we try to work with all budgets.

The average cost of our last several projects was $21-29K. Over the past 10 jobs, the highest price was $38K, while the lowest was $9,000.

We have several done projects lately that are in the range of $30-$40K. Many projects have multiple lofts, cabinets, electrical work and flooring. We do it all. Experience is valuable. We have done full scale home renovations. We are rare craftspeople, who care.

We are licensed and insured, with five stars on Google.
Most importantly, we are passionate about our craft.

Where Are You Based?

We have a wonderful woodshop in Brooklyn, on 27th Street on the northern edge of Sunset Park.

Is Design Included?

When you hire us for a custom design and build, the full color, 3D design work and the bright sharp renderings are always included.

What About Your Materials?

We use some great vendors. For example, lately our clients have been delighted to pick out materials from our sample books from the Prism Arauco Collection. This is a great interactive website where you can see their colors in action. Prism is made in Detroit!

How Long Does it Take to Install?

Installation usually takes 1-2 weeks. We make a lot of your bed in our woodshop in Brooklyn, so most of the sawdust happens off site.

Do You Only Work in the NYC Area?

We are willing to drive a couple hours. We did recently make a Loft Bed project in Philadelphia and it was awesome to see how nice Phillie is. I even put up a nice video about Phillie on the YouTube Channel.

You Have a YouTube Channel?

Yes, our founder Sander is multi-talented, and there are videos about Zen, peace, nonviolence, local politics and great carpentry constructions. Here's a recent loft bed project in the West Village. Also, this is a good video about our annual Peace retreat, Peaceful Lake, Powerful Mountain, and this might just brighten your day.

Why Do People Go With You?

Our Unique Proposition Is That We Offer Serious Value

We make your home a new cozy corner to sleep in, full of good vibes.

This is all based on over 20 years of making loft beds and cozy spaces in NYC. Specifically, our unique value proposition is that we offer:

Great communication, design, speedy service, 3D renderings, great materials, space efficiency, smart interior space management, electrical work, custom furniture built as needed, and of course, our unique staircases with drawers.

All built here in NYC.

Why Do You Set Your Prices Where They Are?

As a company, over time, I’ve experienced that it’s great to have some pricing formulas for common items, like drawers. Yes, we charge about $750 per drawer (Adjusted a little bit for size ). whether it’s a change order or a new project. We try to build some cushions into that so that things like: insurance, overhead, administration, advertising on Google, Hardware, labor, design, supervision, quality plywood (with prefinish), contingency, general conditions, shop time, shop rent plus miscellaneous expenses. Whew! All of those things are built in.

Tell Me About The Craft

Here are some notes, "On Craftsmanship in Practice"

We are proud to adopt certain old-school carpentry standards that are tried and true, and built to last. For example, every "ships ladder" we make has treads that are "notched" into the side rails. Those notches are a joint, a dado joint, very old-school.

We make our drawers out of stiff, pre-finished white, 1/2" cabinet grade plywood. The bottom is also nice and stiff - set into the drawer sides with a notch. It’s not just nailed onto the bottom— that notch is either called a rabbet joint or a Dado joint.

The sides of your drawers will not be particleboard or MDF or the kind of supercheap materials you get from cookie cutter furniture makers. You get the same half inch white material. Strong cabinet grade Plywood.

Our ideal customer wants to support our business and is OK with a decent amount of profitability happening on the job.

Recent emails with thoughtful clients brought up interesting economic questions about price and value.

It’s all happening in the context of the history of capitalism, which experience has taught me is an oppositional force to the traditions of craft and custom carpentry. So it’s definitely a political discussion, and an economic and sociological discussion.

Because in some ways, as you know, we’re competing with the McDonald’s of the industry, which would be IKEA and Wayfair and other mass produced stuff you can find online. But we’re not really competing with them because we have found a niche with people who have a little bit of budget to be able to work with designers who also custom-build. That’s our niche

Do You Do Free Estimates?

Will You Come Back Later and Take the Loft Down?

Yes, we often get re-hired to come back in, move, modify and reassemble lofts for fast-moving New Yorkers. You can also resell it, there IS a secondary market for these lofts, and we'll help move it. Or, sometimes people would like us to recycle the materials, and we do that too.

What is Zen?

Come to our annual peace retreat, and find out! You can discover a real Zen monastery right here in New York State. We produce a retreat there, for peace activists and seekers, every July. Zen is meditation, and it's also a practice to clean the debris from your mind. More info, here.
