Towards a Worker/Owner Cooperative at Loftbedsnyc.com

I am Sander Hicks, founder of Zen Space Makers, Vox Pop and Soft Skull Press. I have been starting social impact productive entities and companies since 1994.

This is my written commitment to create a worker-owned cooperative out of www.Loftbedsnyc.com, which is a part of my existing business, Zen Space Makers, Inc. The time has come to do this, as I intend to expand ZSM Inc. into larger projects, and also expand into, and move operations into South Carolina, where my young son Asher lives.

Loftbedsnyc.com is actually the heart of my business, but it’s not the future of my business. But Ah, Loftbedsnyc.com, how I love it so. It is a crafty, unique small business built to help working people survive the NYC rents, by giving folks more space in their limited NYC apartments. We have been licensed since 2013, but I have been building loft beds since the 1990s. Today, in 2022, we build loft beds, and lofted spaces, for everybody, from the kids of a hedge fund manager, to a social worker looking to adopt some foster children.

So this memo is a way for me to explain to people in my community, WHY now, what is being offered, and what the opportunity is for workers, past and present at LoftBedsNYC.com

I will also translate a version of this into Spanish, and it will be down below. 

A Cooperative is a way to blend democratic socialism, social justice, and capitalism. It allows workers to become “worker/owners” and become working partners in the business that they work at and democratically run. The City of New York has created a $3 million yearly budget to help more cooperatives get started. (See more info on this here.) The Worker Cooperative Business Development Initiative has survived budget cuts during the Pandemic, but it is still going strong. Funding is back to pre-COVID levels.

Yesterday, we had our first Zen Space Makers, Inc./ Loftbedsnyc.com Cooperative Working Group meeting at 1 PM on a conference call. My assistant Su Ferreira attended, as did Zen carpenter T. Saunders, and our web marketing guru David Vibert. (Shout out to www.david.market they are the special sauce for NYC small biz!)

A friend earlier recommended that we look into the NYC program, Owner to Owners.

Owner to Owners, in particular, looks like it is a free resource targeted at people who want to convert traditional business into worker-owned coops.

I have filled out the info and I have submitted it, at Owner to Owners. This looks like a good program for us.

They also want to help support employees of color become worker/owner/partners. That is RIGHT on. Cooperatives are a direct way to combat wealth inequality, institutional racism, and the income gap. And they create more equality, cashflow, and justice in NYC. Capitalism by itself at its worst is brutal, and exploitative. (And I see the changes it has encouraged in myself, and they are not all good.)

The challenges to pulling this off: how do we find a funding mechanism that will help working class people “buy in” and purchase an equity stake in the cooperative? Which consultant should we use to help us transition?

Earlier, with Cooperative Sin Fronteras, I have been a member of NYC NOWC (usually pronounced "Knick Knock") which is the  New York City Network of Worker Cooperatives. More info on them here:

New York City Network of Worker Cooperatives was founded by a community of local worker-members, labor organizers, developers, lawyers, and academics on December 18, 2009 during the 5th Annual Sister Mary Geraldine Symposium, entitled "Fair Work: Building and Strengthening Ties within the Worker-Owner Cooperative Community in New York City." The symposium was organized by the Center for Family Life in Sunset Park and hosted at the CUNY Murphy Institute for Worker Education and Labor Studies. Sitting in a large circle, over 50 individuals and organizations voted unanimously to establish a new organization dedicated to promoting worker cooperatives in New York City.

Our first Loft Beds Cooperative Meeting on Friday, May 27, was great. Let's do these for the next four Fridays in June, as a regular meeting, at 1 PM via phone conference.
